It may be surprising to learn that it is possible that neck pain and visual problems are connected. The following are disorders of the eye or have visual disturbances as a symptom:
- Meniere’s disease
- Pink eye
If you seek care for these conditions, you might start by seeing your primary care or family physician. He or she then might refer you to an ophthalmologist, and then maybe a neurologist. As you can see, these conditions can be quite difficult to find answers for. If you have an additional health problem, the problem becomes even harder to solve.
What Does the Neck Have to Do with Visual Problems?
Here is an interesting example of how the neck can affect vision. A 12-year-old girl suddenly began having poor vision. She was up-to-date on her visual check-ups and had previously had no issues. She had recently had an injury while playing basketball. She visited her OD (doctor of optometry) and he referred her to an upper cervical chiropractor. The chiropractor discovered the bones in her upper cervical spine were out of alignment. He gave her one adjustment and she returned to the OD’s office to tell him what was happening. When she arrived, just 10 minutes later, her vision was back to being completely normal.
Here at Haan Family Chiropractic in Huxley, Iowa, we understand the importance of a properly aligned neck. We have been specifically trained to find tiny misalignments of the neck and then work to correct them. It only takes a misalignment of ¼ of a millimeter to cause a number of health issues throughout the body, including eye problems. This has to do with the fact that the brainstem is located in the same area as the C1 and C2 vertebrae. If they are misaligned, they can put stress on the brainstem and cause it to malfunction.
We use a gentle method to encourage these bones to move back into place naturally without the need to pop or crack the neck. This results in relief of not only neck pain and visual problems but also many other health issues that accompany a misaligned neck.
